SIMPLIFYING YOUR LIFE

Simplifying can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. It can apply to many aspects of our lives: relationships, our homes, the commitments we make, social media. Ultimately, we can all agree that the underlying goal of simplifying is to make life easier. For the past few weeks I made a conscious decision to take a little breather from blogging. We all have heard the downfalls of this amazing blogosphere, the thief of comparison. There are so many amazing bloggers out there that it is hard to not compare yourself to them and their successes. I found myself turning in to such a negative person. Spending way too much of my time trying to make myself and my blog like theres and loosing my own voice as a writer. With my little break from blogging I also decided to take a little breather from other aspects of my life I found to be a "waste of time", mainly television. Lucky for me, my little break came right when a lot of my favorite shows were wrapping up for the season, but it still felt amazing to not have the TV on. Instead I got to discover new music, read lots of new books (and old favorites), riding my bike around the city, discovering new restaurants, focusing more on my photography, doing some DIY projects I've had on the back burner, and even cooking up some new recipes.  Safe to say this little break of mine has turned out to be one of the best decisions I made for myself. I do want to apologize, however, for leaving you all high and dry. Perhaps I should have made a little announcement on the blog, but to be honest I just didn't have it in me at the time to explain. And I didn't want to be all cryptic and up and disappear. But the good news is, I'M BACK, and feeling so refreshed!

With a new outlook and rested soul, I thought I'd share a few of my tips to help simplify your life! I promise, they work!! xx

This could be as simple as cleaning out that junk drawer (you know we all have one) that has accumulated over the years, going through your closet and getting rid of those pieces you've unnecessarily held on to, or even going through your purse and taking out those old recites, movie stubs, make-up, what have you! Having less clutter in your life can give you a refreshed feeling of just being free.

If you're anything like me then the question "What's for dinner?" automatically sends that anxiety rising. After getting married I wanted to be that great wife who has an amazing dinner on the table each night when her husband gets home. Cooking is really not my favorite activity. *Note to self: If I ever become rich, a personal chef is numero uno.* Cue Pinterest! Thanks to "pinning" I've been getting better at making weekly meal plans. Pick 3 to 4 simple meals you found off Pinterest, stock up at your local grocery store and make those simple and delicious meals whichever night you had planned. Don't forget, left overs are your friend! I promise you, your man won't mind eating the same thing 2 nights in a row.

This sounds simple, but it works! I love waking up first thing, writing out my tasks for the day and checking them off, one by one, as I go! It helps you keep your day organized and on track! This planner will become your best friend!

The minute you step through your door, you are home and no more work! Wahoo! When it's time for bed put your phone away! This is time for you to be by yourself and reflect on your day. There is no need for you to be submersing yourself in someone else's life right before you go to bed. Establishing these types of boundaries will help keep you in the moment.

Just do it! I can't tell you how many times I could have saved myself from tears and frustration if I had only just asked for help. People want to help you, remember that!

What tips have you found that help you create a simpler life? Share your thoughts below!!

  3. This is amazing advice, TJ. So many things in todays world can literally suck our lives away if we're not carefull.
Getting rid if stuff is something ive been working on. I have this dream of ramblin around the country living out of a van, and i cannot do that now. I have so. Much. Stuff. But im getting there, you know? A little at a time and every little bit helps.

  4. good for you, tj. glad you got away and had that time to rediscover YOU. you "sound" happier and refreshed and it comes out in your writing on this post. ;)

these are great tips for simplifying and enjoying bits of the day we usually rush through. i find few things more therapeutic that cleaning out my closet or getting rid of accumlated "junk". my most challenging task is establishing boundaries because i'm such a multi-tasker. at night after the baby has gone to sleep, i want to unwind in front of the tv, catch up with my husband, AND check my email or instagram. there's no way to focus on all that at once! *smh*

  5. we have all been there--comparing ourselves and our lives to others and theirs'. I think that is probably the most difficult part of blogging but know that I love your blog and am glad you're back! these are some great tips..especially the one about preparing quick meals. I think I overestimate myself int he kitchen all too often, ha. something I do to simplify my life is have a "me day" every week. whatever day I don't have anything going on, I just do whatever I want to do. whether that's searching all over for a pink doughnut with sprinkles or laying by the pool. from 8-5, I don't do anything I don't want to do. it is a really important refresher for the rest of my week :)

  8. Love the establishing boundaries. That's a good one to focus on. I also use a planner daily, and have one for work, my blog, and my personal life. Then I have one where everything is all together so I never miss one thing. It has helped me SO much. Plus it's nice because I have a hard time trying to pick out a planner due to all of the cute products out there.

  10. I found that since I got caught up in the comparison trap too easily with certain types of blogs (and since I always wanted to buy more clothes and better stuff for our apartment as a result), simply un-following those types of blogs and reading blogs with my same goals in mind made a HUGE difference. I love minimalist blogs, like The Minimalists, Becoming Minimalist, and Just a Little Less. I highly recommend you check them out!

    1. Checking them out now! And you're right, sometimes the best way to get rid of those comparison traps is to remove them from your life completely. Clean slate ;)

  13. Yay, so very glad that you are back! I've gone through a similar patch with my blog in the last couple of months... so instead, I said 'screw it' and started posting what I wanted to post instead of things I thought would resonate better with readers. And I started posting a whole lot less. Even though I do want to get back to the point where I want to blog more often and have more content, right now - I'm happy where I am with it :)

These are all such wonderful tips! I really should go through everything and toss out clutter. My purse is a nightmare right now!

  21. This is such a great post. Now, I need to clean out my junky closet and buy a planner. You are so right! Those things really do have an effect on your mental peace.
I also like taking extra time to grab coffee with a friend that I haven't been able to catch up with for a while. It reminds me what things really matter in life. Relationships, not tasks and climbing levels of success.
